i need directions on how to install a fat bob gas tank on to a 1989 harley davidson sportster?

You will be hard pressed to find downloadable instructions on how to do this. The Sportster did not come with a FatBob tank as you already know. Installing that tank onto that bike is a CUSTOM job. Custom, means just that, custom. We don’t know what manufacturer made your tank, whether it’s actually for a Sportster or not, what accessories you have for it, does it use a dash panel, what side of the tank does the fuel valve go on, wiil your fuel valve work with that tank in that postion, etc? Some tanks actually require the welding of brackets to the frame. Some tanks MAY come with instructions, but most don’t. You would honestly be best off to take it to shop.
